Before Sharpsburg
An overseer's son, in 1860 he was an 18 year old farm worker living with his parents and brother Hiram near Madison in Morgan County, GA. He enlisted there on 29 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company G of the Infantry Battalion, Cobb's Legion.
On the Campaign
He was wounded by a gunshot in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was home on furlough to at least the end of 1862. He was appointed 4th Corporal by June 1864 and was captured at Sailor's Creek, VA on 6 April 1865, by then a Sergeant, and was held at Newport News, VA. He took an oath of allegiance to the United States there on 25 June and was released.
After the War
By 1870 he was a farmer living with his parents (and new wife) in Madison, GA. By 1900 he was a farmer in Pope County, AR.
