Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 22 year old living on the Thomas M Meriwether plantation (36 slaves) at Conyers, Newton County, GA. He enlisted in Covington, GA on 1 August 1861 and mustered on 5 August as a Private in Company A of the Infantry Battalion, Cobb's Legion. He was appointed 2nd Corporal by December 1861, but was reduced to Private and detailed as a drummer to the band by February 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was sent from Fort Delaware to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange on 2 (or 6) October, and formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 8 October and sent back to his unit on 10 December 1862. He was promoted to 4th Sergeant by April 1863 and was captured again, at Sailor's Creek, VA on 6 April 1865. He was a prisoner at Newport News, VA to 25 June 1865 when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released.

After the War

In 1870 he was a teacher (?) at Brick Store in Newton County, GA by 1880 he was a teacher and farmer in Fulton County, GA. In 1900 he was a night watchman at Edgewood in DeKalb County, GA.
