Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 20 year old farm worker on the Jesse Cockrell place near his widowed mother and younger siblings at Flint Hill in Carroll County, GA. He enlisted in Carrollton, GA on 15 August 1861 and mustered as First Sergeant of Company F of the Infantry Battalion, Cobb's Legion. He was elected 3rd Lieutenant on 9 February 1862 and promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 24 July.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded through both thighs in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 and captured.
The rest of the War
He was treated at the US 6th Army Corps field hospital in Burkittsville, MD but died there of his wounds on 17 October 1862.
His mother Nancy filed for his final pay in September 1863, which was probably paid in November 1864.
