Richard McPherson Whitehead

Before Sharpsburg

Son of a physician, he was orphaned at about age 12 at his father's death in 1847. At age 26 he enrolled in Waynesboro, GA on 1 August 1861 and mustered as 2nd Lieutenant of Company E of the Infantry Battalion, Cobb's Legion. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the face and arm in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 and captured.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the US 6th Army Corps field hospital in Burkittsville, MD then sent to Fort McHenry in Baltimore and, on 11 October 1862, on to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was promoted to Captain on 27 April 1863. He was wounded by a gunshot to his scalp on 13 May 1864 and again home on furlough for 30 days from 23 May. He was killed in action at Front Royal, VA on 16 August 1864.
