Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted in Athens, GA on 5 September 1861 and mustered as 2nd Sergeant of Company D of the Infantry Battalion, Cobb's Legion. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in May 1862 and promoted to First Lieutenant on 16 August.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action at Sharpsburg on 16 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was sent from Fort Delaware to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange on 6 October. He was promoted to Captain to date from 14 September, was formally exchanged on 10 November, and returned to his company on 20 November 1862. He was sick in a Richmond, VA hospital with cerebral meningitis in April 1863 and and sent home to Augusta, GA on a 30 day furlough on 14 May. He was killed in the assault on Fort Sanders at Knoxville, TN on 29 November 1863.
His father Charles filed a claim for his final pay in December 1863.
