Before Sharpsburg
A merchant's son, in 1860 he was a 24 year old foundryman living with his father and 3 siblings in Atlanta, GA. He enlisted there on 3 May 1862 and mustered on 6 May as a Private in Company B, Cobb's Legion Cavalry. He was promoted to 2nd Sergeant by June 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded by a gunshot to his left hip/buttock in action in Maryland in September 1862, date and place not found.
The rest of the War
He was admitted to a CS hospital in Charlottesville, VA on 23 September and furloughed on 9 October. He returned to duty on 15 November and was appointed First Sergeant on 21 November 1862. He was wounded again, by a gunshot at Brandy Station, VA on 1 August 1863, sent back to the hospital in Charlottesville on the 4th, then home to Atlanta on furlough on 21 August. He was there to at least October 1864 and was retired from field service by a medical board in January 1865 due to continued disability from his 1862 wound.
After the War
In 1870 he was in business with his father in Atlanta, and lived with him there. At his father's death in 1878 he took over the family ginning business, Winship & Brother, later the Winship Machine Company and in 1880 was listed as a founder and machinist. He was in manufacturing to at least 1900, and was a successful Atlanta businessman and president of the Atlanta Banking & Savings Company at his death at his summer home in Florida at age 80 in 1916.

He married Mary Eugenia Speer (1840-1869) in November 1860 and they had 2 daughters. He married again, Helen Tallulah "Lula" Lane (1853-1895) in October 1879 and they had 2 sons. He married a third time, Elizabeth Thiot (1861-1942) in 1896 and they had a son, Charles (1903-1987).
