Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted in Talladega, AL on 1 May 1861 and mustered as a Sergeant in Company E (later B), 5th Alabama Infantry. He was wounded by a gunshot to his arm in July 1862, place not given, and in hospitals in Richmond, Lynchburg, and Danville, VA. He returned to duty on 20 August.
On the Campaign
He was with his company in Maryland and "Brigadier-General Rodes reports as specially deserving notice for their gallantry ... Sergt. A. Swicegood."
The rest of the War
He was First Sergeant by January 1863, when he was sick with fever in a hospital in Charlottesville, VA. There is no later military record.
