Before Sharpsburg

Probably an orphan before age 10, by 1850 and to at least 1860 he lived on the Nathan Amason farm in Sumter County, AL. In 1860 he was a prosperous 20 year old farmer and owned 24 slaves (Amason owned another 32). He enlisted in Livingston, AL on 15 April 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B (later G), 5th Alabama Infantry. He was appointed Color Corporal, date not found.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in Maryland and "Brigadier-General Rodes reports as specially deserving notice for their gallantry ... Color-Corpl. Joshua Smith."

The rest of the War

He was killed in action at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863.
