Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted in Montgomery, AL on 26 April 1861 and mustered as 4th Sergeant of Company F, 3rd Alabama Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in Maryland and "Brigadier-General Rodes reports as specially deserving notice for their gallantry ... Sergt William Taylor."

The rest of the War

He was slightly wounded at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863, by then First Sergeant, and was elected Junior 2nd (3rd) Lieutenant at Grace Church, VA on 21 May 1863. He was wounded again, by a gunshot to his right thigh at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and "carried from the field." He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 15 July then furloughed home for 60 days. He was back in a Richmond hospital from April to at least June 1864. He was again with his company by August, but absent on a leave of indulgence in and after January 1865.
