Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 19 year old living with his parents, 6 siblings, a tutor, and 13 slaves (in mother Elizabeth's name) on their plantation at Sandersville, Washington County, GA. He enlisted in Griffin, GA on 10 September 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B of the 28th Georgia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was noted by Brigadier General Colquitt for gallantry in Maryland and was initially listed as missing in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862, with no later record. Presumed killed.

His service from his Compiled Service Records,1 online from fold3, as J.W. Thompkins. The Colquitt citation is from General D H Hill's after-action report. Personal details from family genealogists, at least one of whom has his death at Petersburg, VA in July 1864, and the US Census of 1860.
