Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 36 year old merchant and owner of 10 slaves at Murfreesboro, NC. He enrolled in Hertford County, NC on 16 May 1861 and mustered as Captain of Company F, First North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
Brigadier General Doles recognized him for gallantry while "acting Major" in Maryland.
The rest of the War
He was wounded at Chancellorsville on 3 May 1863, and was promoted to Major on 29 July and to Lieutenant Colonel on 14 December 1863. He was captured on 12 May 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, VA and a prisoner at Fort Delaware, then sent to Hilton Head, SC on 21 June 1864. He was back at Fort Delaware by 24 July 1865, when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released.
After the War
By 1870 he was again a merchant in Murfreesboro, NC and in 1888-89 was elected Chair of the Board of County Commissioners.

He married Susan A. Ruffin (1835-1857) in June 1857; she died 2 months later. He married again, Ellen Ora Lawrence (1837-1920) in November 1863 and they had 3 children.
