He enrolled at Concord, NC on 16 May 1861 and mustered on 20 June as 2nd Lieutenant of Company H, 5th North Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in February 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mentioned as having been "highly commended" by his commanding officer for his service on the Campaign and was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Captain on 12 October 1862, but did not return to his company due to his wound, and was appointed Post Quartermaster, place not found, on 16 June 1863. He resigned his commission in the 5th Infantry on 18 July and was appointed Captain and Assistant Quartermaster, PACS on 2 February 1864 (to ate from 14 June 1863).
