Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 20 year old clerk, possibly for his merchant father, living with his parents, 2 sisters, and 11 slaves at Fayetteville, NC. He enrolled on 11 July 1862 and mustered as 2nd Lieutenant of Company A, 5th North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was mentioned as having been "highly commended" by his commanding officer for his service on the Campaign.
The rest of the War
He was in hospitals, ill, for much of 1863 and was detailed as an enrolling officer at Yadkin County, NC in February 1864 - due to disability for field service - to at least February 1865, the last record in his military file.
After the War
In 1880 he was a merchant back with his parents and sisters in Fayetteville. By 1910 he was a retail grocer there and shared his house with his wife and 2 sisters. In 1920 he was still a grocer, living with his sister Malinda.
