Before Sharpsburg

A 22 year old rigger, he enlisted in New Bern on 1 June 1861 and mustered on 13 July as 2nd Sergeant of Company D, 5th North Carolina Infantry. He was appointed First Sergeant on 31 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was mentioned as having been "highly commended" by his commanding officer for his service on the Campaign.

The rest of the War

He was elected 2nd Lieutenant on 21 (or 24) September, commended again, for "coolness, skill, and daring" at Chancellorsville, VA in May 1863, and promoted to First Lieutenant on 1 June 1863. He was "instantly" killed in action at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863.
