Before Sharpsburg

Of a Scottish-born father who died before 1840, he was orphaned at his mother's death in 1852 and in 1860 was a 22 year old clerk living with prosperous merchant William Fife and family at New Bern, NC. He enlisted there on 20 June 1861 and mustered on 13 July as a Private in Company D, 5th North Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to 2nd Corporal on 31 September and was wounded and captured at Williamsburg, VA on 5 May 1862. He was sent from the prison at Fort Delaware to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange on 5 August and was promoted to 4th Sergeant on 18 August.

On the Campaign

He was mentioned as having been "highly commended" by his commanding officer for his service on the Campaign and was wounded by a gunshot at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 26 September and furloughed to Goldsboro, NC on 30 September. and was elected 2nd Lieutenant on 23 December 1862. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 1 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA and was wounded again, by a gunshot through his left ankle near Brandy Station, VA, on 11 October 1863. He was returned to duty from the hospital on 4 November. He was promoted to Captain on 12 May 1864 and was with his company to at least February 1865. He was captured in a hospital in Richmond, VA on 3 April 1865 and was paroled on 22 April.

After the War

By 1880 he was a farmer in Beaufort County, NC.
