Before Sharpsburg

A 16 year old from Sampson County, he enlisted in Clinton, NC on 9 May 1861 and mustered on 18 June as a Private in Company F, 20th North Carolina Infantry. He saw action at Cold Harbor and Malvern Hill, VA in 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in Maryland and was later mentioned by Brigadier General D.H. Hill as "specially distinguished as a bold and intelligent scout at South Mountain" on 14 September 1862. He was also in action at Sharpsburg on the 17th.

The rest of the War

He was discharged on 7 October 1862 at Bunker Hill, VA.

He enlisted again, on 3 December 1863 and mustered as a Private in Captain A.A. Moseley's Sampson Artillery (unattached NC Troops). He was promoted to Corporal on 5 February 1864 and to Sergeant on 1 June. He was surrendered and paroled with his battery at Greensboro, NC on 28 April 1865.
