Before Sharpsburg

Age 23, he enlisted and mustered in Raleigh, NC on 21 May 1861 as 2nd Lieutenant of Captain W.H. Harrison's Company, 4th Regiment North Carolina Infantry. They were re-designated Company K of the 14th North Carolina Infantry on November 1861. He was elected First Lieutenant on 7 March 1862 and Captain on 26 April.

On the Campaign

He was commended by Colonel Bennett for his actions on the campaign and was captured at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was held at Fort Delaware until transferred to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange on 6 October, was in a Richmond, VA hospital on 10 October, and furloughed home the next day. He was was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862 and led his company at Chancellorsville, VA in May 1863 and at Gettysburg, PA in July. He was back in a hospital in Richmond with a gunshot to his left arm and side on 15 May 1864, in a Raleigh hospital by 11 June, then sent to Florence, SC. He was back with his command by August and probably with them to the end of the war.
