Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was an 18 year old farmer living with his parents on their farm at Mount Pleasant in Cabarrus County, NC. He enlisted in Concord, NC on 15 June 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company F, First North Carolina Cavalry. He transferred to the regimental staff as a Musician on 1 February 1862. He was captured in action on 29 June, probably in a skirmish at Wills Church, VA, and was a prisoner at Fort Columbus in New York Harbor on 3 July, then at Fort Delaware by 9 July. He was exchanged at Aikens' Landing, VA on 5 August and rejoined his regiment.
On the Campaign
He was captured again, in Maryland on 10 September 1862, place not found.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, again a prisoner at Fort Delaware, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA on 2 October for exchange. He was formally exchanged there on 10 November to return to duty.
He was admitted to the CSA General Hospital in Charlottesville, VA on 19 February 1863 and died of disease there on 5 April 1863.
