Age 22, from Chowan County, NC, he enlisted at Edenton, NC on 18 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company A, First North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was left behind, ill, in Frederick, MD and captured there on 12 or 13 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD and transferred to Fort McHenry in Baltimore for exchange on about 19 September. He was in a hospital in Richmond, VA by 15 October then absent on sick furlough to at least April 1863. He was promoted to Corporal on 15 June 1863 and captured again, probably near Mechanicsville, VA, on 12 May 1864. He was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD by 18 May, transferred to Elmira, NY on 3 August, and sent to James River, VA on 15 March 1865, the last record in his military file.
