Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 17 year old living with his parents and 4 younger siblings on their farm at Green Plains in Northampton County, NC. He enlisted at R. Chapel (Chapel Hill?), NC on 26 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company F, First North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was left behind, ill, in Frederick, MD and captured there on 12 or 13 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick then sent to Fort McHenry in Baltimore for exchange about 19 September. He was on parole by October and back with his company in December 1862. He was promoted to Corporal about May 1863 but was killed in action on 17 June 1863 at Winchester, VA.
