Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 15 year old living with his parents and 5 siblings on their farm near Greensboro in Guilford County, NC. He was conscripted there on 8 July 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company H, First North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was left behind, ill, in Frederick, MD and captured there on 12 or 13 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick then sent to Fort McHenry in Baltimore for exchange about 19 September. He was in a hospital in Richmond, VA by 13 October and was back with his company by December 1862. He was captured in the Wilderness, VA on 12 May 1864 and a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD to 1 November, when he was exchanged. He was on furlough home in December 1864. He was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
