Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 54 year old farmer at Okolona in Chickasaw County, MS. He enlisted in Richmond, VA on 2 July 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company C, 11th Mississippi Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a hospital in Richmond, VA on 11 October, furloughed for 20 days, and formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.

He was captured again, on the return from Gettysburg, at Emmittsburg, MD on 4 July 1863, briefly at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, then a prisoner at Fort Delaware. He died there of acute dysentery on 30 September 1862.

His service from his Compiled Service Records,1 online from fold3. Two Confederate documents have his death at Fort Delaware on 5 November 1863; one says drowning, the other wounds. He married Martha Mary Williams (1810-) in November 1828 and they had 10 children: 3 boys, 7 girls.
