Age 25, he enlisted in Corinth, MS on 30 April 1861 and mustered the same day as a Private in Company A, 12th Mississippi Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 2 October then probably sent to Fort McHenry in Baltimore for exchange. He was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital #1 on 13 October and was listed as a deserter from the hospital on 2 December 1862.

He was back a hospital in Richmond, VA with pneumonia in February 1863, was transferred to Danville, VA in March, and finally returned to duty on 27 October 1863. He was captured again, in action at Cold Harbor, VA on 6 June 1864, and was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD until exchanged on 1 November. He was furloughed for 40 days on 24 November 1864 and was sick in the brigade infirmary and a hospital in Danville, VA in March and April 1865, the latest records in his military file.
