Age 23, a mechanic, he enlisted in Union City, TN on 17 June 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company A, 12th Mississippi Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 (22?) September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.

He was wounded in the right arm in action at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863. His arm was amputated, he was sent home on furlough on 21 May, and was discharged for disability on 13 September 1863.
