Before Sharpsburg
Age 22, he enlisted in Sardis, MS in February 1861 and mustered there on 20 April (or in Corinth, MS on 8 May) as a Private in Company E (later F), 12th Mississippi Infantry. He was wounded by a gunshot to his right thigh in action near Richmond, VA between 26 June and 1 July 1862.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 (or 22) September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA for his old thigh wound on 31 October and was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.
He was listed as a deserter as of 10 November and noted as having "escaped as a prisoner from Provost Guard about Feb 20 [1863] and has not been herd from since." He had "voluntarily come within the lines of the US Army," requested not to be returned or exchanged, and was paroled to remain in "any of the loyal States." There is no later record with the 12th Mississippi.
