Before Sharpsburg
His mother died when he was 4 years old, and his physician father died when he was 9. In 1860 he was a 17 year old at Port Gibson in Claiborne County, MS. After his university classes were suspended, he enlisted in Meridian, MS on 11 March 1862 as a Private in Company G, 36th Mississippi Infantry. Two weeks later, at Yorktown, VA, he transferred to Company K, 12th Mississippi Infantry and he mustered with them on 10 April.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange, arriving on 6 October. He was formally exchanged on 10 November. He was furloughed for 30 days from a Richmond, VA hospital on 14 December 1862.
He was with his company until captured again, at Farmville, VA on 6 April 1865. He was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD to 20 June when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States, was released, and was provided transportation to Hazlehurst, MS.
After the War
A lawyer, he was a member of the Mississippi legislature in 1870-71 and for a term in 1882. He also served as District Attorney for Claiborne County.
