Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 17 year old apprentice living with master coach maker Fr. Pierce in Norfolk, VA. He enlisted in Norfolk, VA on 6 May (or 19 April) 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company H, 12th Virginia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange, arriving on 6 October. He was formally exchanged on 10 November.

He was captured again, on 30 April 1863 near Frederickburg, VA, briefly in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC, then held at Fort Delaware. He was paroled and back with his unit by 30 June 1863. He was captured for the third time, at Bermuda Hundred, VA on 4 April 1865 and sent to Hart's Island in New York Harbor. He took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released on 6 June 1865.
