Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 44 year old carpenter near Woodstock in Shenandoah County, VA. He enlisted in Shenandoah County, VA on 27 March 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company E, 12th Virginia Cavalry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD about 9 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 9 October, furloughed for 30 days on 21 October, and was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862. He rejoined his company about April 1864, the latest record in his military file.

He probably also had service in Company E of the 146th Regiment, Virginia Militia.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a farmer in Shenandoah County. He was appointed Shenandoah County surveyor in January 1888 and was out on a property line when he died of an apparent heart attach at age 72.

He married Catherine Bowman (1826-1892) in February 1843 and they had 10 children.
