Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 21 year old overseer on the Thomas M Harkness plantation (35 slaves) at Jackson in Butts County, GA. He enlisted in Atlanta, GA on 12 July 1861 and mustered as 2nd Corporal of Company I, 14th Georgia Infantry. He was promoted to First Sergeant in 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in Maryland and was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.

He was captured again, on 12 May 1864 at Mine Run, VA, and was again a prisoner at Fort Delaware from 20 May to 7 March 1865, when he was exchanged.

After the War

In 1870 he was a farmer at Griffin in Spalding County, GA but by 1880 and to at least 1900 was farming in DeKalb County, AL. In 1882 he applied for a post office for the community of Johnson (formerly Lee), now part of Geraldine, AL, and was postmaster there.
