Son of a farm laborer, in 1860 he was a 16 year old living with his parents and 7 siblings at Fair Grove in Davidson County, NC. He was conscripted into service in Raleigh, NC on 16 July 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company A of the 14th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, was left behind and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September, then sent to Fort Delaware, where he died on 12 November 1862.
