In 1860 he was an 18 year old farm worker living with prosperous planter James W. Welborn and family on their place at Asheboro in Randolph County, NC. He enlisted at Thomasville, NC on 26 August 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B, 14th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
