A farmer's son from Davidson County, NC, age 27, he was conscripted at Raleigh, NC on 16 July 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company I, 14th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September, sent to Fort Delaware, then, on 2 October, on to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange, arriving on 6 October. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 8 October, was on furlough from 14 October to 14 November, having been formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.

He was with company to at least the end of August 1864, the latest record in his military file.
