Before Sharpsburg

Age 36, he enlisted at Lightwood Knot Springs near Columbia, SC on 16 August 1861 and mustered on 10 September as a Private in Company E, 14th South Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September, sent to Fort Delaware, then, on 2 October, on to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital by 27 October then sent to the parole camp at Camp Lee, VA. He was formally exchanged on 10 November and furloughed home for 40 days on 11 November 1862.

He was wounded and captured at Williamsport, MD on 6 July 1863 and sent to Fort Delaware. He was exchanged and released on 18 September 1864, but was afterward sick in hospitals to at least the end of the year. He was admitted to the CS hospital in Farmville, VA on 12 April 1865 and was surrendered and paroled there by 21 April.
