Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 41 year old laborer at Riggsbee's Store in Chatham County, NC. He enlisted there (with Lt. Riggsbee) on 25 February 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B of the 49th North Carolina Infantry on 21 April.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, was left behind, and was captured there on the 12th.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 22 September, sent to Fort Delaware, then, on 2 October, on to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange, arriving there on the 6th. He was admitted that day to CS General Hospital #23 in Richmond, VA but died there on 9 October 1862.

His widow "Ansley" filed a claim for his final pay in January 1864.

There were 11 Riggsbees in Company B during the war; most transferred to Co. D of the 15th NC in January 1863.
