Before Sharpsburg
A 30 year old farmer in Haywood County, NC, he enlisted in Waynesville, NC on 15 March 1862 and mustered the same day as a Private in Company L of the 16th North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, was left behind, and was captured there on the 12th.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange, arriving there on the 6th. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 20 October and was paid on 29 October. He then left for home on a furlough of 30 days but never got there, and there are no later records in his military file.
In January 1863 his father Silas offered a reward for information about him.

His service from his Compiled Service Records,1 online from fold3. He's also on the Confederates In Frederick List.2 His father's notice was printed in the Weekly Raleigh Register editions of 31 January, 4 February, and 11 February 1863. His memorial is on Findagrave.
He married Mercilla (or Miranda) C Teague (1839-) in January 1852 and they had 5 children.
His brothers Milas Alexander (1841-1920) and Leander Nimrod Kirkpatrick (b. 1830) were also in Company L. Milas went on wounded furlough in late August 1862 and did not return to the war. Leander was mortally wounded on 1 September 1862 at Chantilly, VA and died on 3 September.
