Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 29 year old farmer with 2 slaves in Suffolk, VA. He enlisted at Tann Crossroads in Nansemond County, VA on 19 June 1861 and mustered there on 19 June as a Private in Company B of the 16th Virginia Infantry. He was home, sick, from August into December 1861. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 27 June 1862, sent to Danville, VA on 30 June.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September, transferred to Chester, PA, then, on 5 May 1863, to Fort McHenry in Baltimore. He was sent to Fortress Monroe for exchange on 11 May and was back with his company by June 1863. He was wounded on 19 August 1864, place not given, and was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a farmer in Isle of Wight County, VA.

He married Elizabeth Ann Chapman (1837-) in January 1853 and they had 6 children. He married again, Indiana Virginia Bradshaw (1844-1918) in April 1868 and they had 7 more by 1875.
