Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 21 year old farmer living with his father Belson, 6 siblings, and 1 slave on their farm at Suffolk in Nansemond County, VA. He enlisted at Tann Crossroads, VA on 11 June 1861 and mustered there on 30 June as a Private in Company B of the 16th Virginia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September, then at Fort Delaware to 2 October, when he was sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was back with his company and formally exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was wounded on 30 July 1864, probably in the Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, VA, and was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
