James Coggin

In 1860 he was a 23 year old farm laborer at Smithfield in Isle of Wight County, VA. He enlisted at Windsor, VA on 22 April 1861 and mustered in Suffolk, VA on 29 April as a Private in Company D of the 16th Virginia Infantry.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 6 October, furloughed home on 20 October, and was formally exchanged on 10 November.

In January 1863 he was under arrest on charges of being absent without leave after 16 November 1862. He was sentenced by a court martial to forfeit 2 months' pay and was released from arrest on 22 April 1863. He was frequently ill in late 1863 and early 1864, and died of necrosis in CS General Hospital #2 in Lynchburg, VA on 20 April 1864.

His brothers Joseph and John (1839-1915) were also in Company D. Joseph (b. 1841) died of diphtheria in a CS hospital in Charlottesville, VA on 16 June 1862.
