Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted at Stony Creek Depot, VA on 4 April 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company E of the 16th Virginia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 9 October, furloughed for 30 days on 27 October, and was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.

Except for brief absences, he was with his company for the rest of the war and was surrendered and paroled with them at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
