Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an unmarried 18 year old living with his recently widowed mother Malinda, 6 siblings, and 2 slaves on their farm at Mt. Pleasant in Marshall County MS. He enlisted at Corinth, MS on 29 May 1861 and mustered there the same day as a Private in Company F of the 17th Mississippi Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort McHenry in Baltimore to 11 October, when he was sent to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange. He was furloughed in October and formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.

He was listed as absent without leave in Marshall County, MS having failed to return by 1 March 1863, and was formally declared a deserter on 25 January 1864. There is no later record in his military file.

After the War

In 1870 he was farming with his mother and 4 siblings back in Marshall County, MS and by 1880 was a farmer with his own place at Mt Pleasant, MS, though his mother still lived with him.
