Before Sharpsburg
A 36 (or 46) year old shoemaker, he enlisted in Alexandria, VA on 14 May 1861, and mustered the same day as a 3rd Corporal of Company I, 17th Virginia Infantry. He was First Corporal by December 1861.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital then furloughed for 30 days on 7 November, and was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.
He was captured again, at Suffolk, VA on 15 April 1863 and paroled for exchange at Fortress Monroe, VA on 21 April. He was captured for the third time (or deserted to the enemy) at Harpers Ferry on 23 July 1863, held at Fort McHenry to 31 July, then was a prisoner at Fort Delaware. He took an oath of allegiance there to the United States and was released on 4 May 1865.
