Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 17 year old living with his parents and 3 siblings on their small farm at Conyers in Newton County, GA. He enlisted there on 15 February 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company B, 18th Georgia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 5 October, then transferred for exchange, place not given. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital from 27 October to 4 November 1862. He was afterward with his company through the war until captured at Burkeville, VA on 6 April 1865. He was a prisoner at Newport News, VA until 25 June 1865 when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released.
