Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 19 year old farmer living with his parents and 4 siblings on their small farm near Grove in Elbert County, GA. He enlisted there on 15 October 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B, 38th Georgia Infantry. His company was re-designated "H" by February 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot to his right hand in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

The second finger of his right hand was amputated and he was afterward on wounded furlough and never rejoined his company. He was surrendered and paroled at Hartwell, GA on 19 May 1865.
