Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 16 year old day laborer at Cassville in Cass County, GA. He enlisted at Camp McDonald at Big Shanty, GA on 11 June 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company G, 18th Georgia Infantry. He was slightly wounded in the hip at Cold Harbor, VA on 27 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 22 October, then transferred for exchange, place not given.

He was captured again, on 1 June 1864 at Cold Harbor, VA, and sent to Point Lookout, MD. He was transferred to Elmira, NY on 12 July and was released on 21 June 1865 after taking an oath of allegiance to the United States.
