Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 28 year old cooper at Stanhope in Nash County, NC. He enlisted on 23 April 1861 at Whiteville, NC and mustered in Wilmington, NC on 15 June as a Private in Company H (Columbus Guards No. 1), 8th North Carolina Infantry. They were re-designated the 18th Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was treated for a gunshot wound in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November.

He was promoted to 3rd Corporal by August 1863 and in about June 1864 he was "wounded accidentally while absent from his [command] home on furlough." He returned to his company by October 1864 but was detailed on light duty by a medical board on 5 January 1865 with no later military record.
