Before Antietam

Age 32, he enrolled and mustered on 23 April 1861 as Captain, Company D, 11th Pennsylvania Infantry for 3 months' service. He mustered out with them on 1 August 1861. He enrolled again, in Williamsport on 4 August 1862, and mustered as Captain of Company I, 131st Pennsylvania Infantry in Harrisburg on 14 August. He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment on 19 August.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment in Maryland while Colonel Allabach led the Brigade.

The rest of the War

He mustered out with his regiment on 23 May 1863.
