Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted at Jackson, MS on 14 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B (the Jackson Boys), an independent infantry company attached to the 26th Regiment Virginia Volunteers. The became Company A of the 2nd Mississippi Infantry Battalion on 16 October 1861.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 17 September then transferred for exchange. He was back with his company by November 1862.

He was in a hospital in Richmond, VA then furloughed for 30 days on 6 March 1863, and was listed as absent without leave, and later as a deserter, when he hadn't returned by 8 April 1863. There is no later record with the 2nd Battalion.
