Age 30, he was conscripted in Raleigh, NC on 15 July 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company E of the 2nd North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD sick on 10 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was probably in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD and was paroled on 26 September 1862 with no further hospital or POW records. He was later "supposed to be dead or to have deserted" and was never seen again.
