Before Sharpsburg

A clergyman's son, in 1860 he was a 20 year old farm hand living with his parents, 5 siblings, and 2 slaves at Mount Pleasant in Cabarrus County, NC. He enlisted in Concord, NC on 29 April 1861 and mustered at Fort Johnston near Southport, NC on 18 June as a Private in Company B of the 10th North Carolina Infantry. They were re-designated the 20th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD sick by 12 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 19 September, then in the Camden Street US Army General Hospital in Baltimore, and was sent on to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange on 11 October. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 15 October, on furlough from 16 October to at least 26 November, and was back with his company by February 1863.

He was absent again, on a surgeon's certificate, after March 1863 and did not return. He was "never in an engagement on account of sickness" and may not have survived the war.
