Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 28 year old farmer with a small place at Swansboro in Onslow County, NC. He enlisted on 6 May 1861 in Jacksonville, NC and mustered as a Private in Company B of the 14th North Carolina Infantry in July. They were re-designated the 24th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, sick, by 12 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September then transferred for exchange. He was in Richmond for pay on 12 November 1862 and afterward absent, sick or on detail, to about August 1863. He was a prisoner at Castle Thunder in Richmond, VA in June 1864 (charges not found) and deserted "from the trenches" at Petersburg on 20 November 1864. He went over to the Federal lines, took an oath of allegiance to the United States in Washington, DC on 23 November, and was sent on to Philadelphia, PA. No later military record found.
After the War
By 1880 and to at least 1900 he was again a farmer at Swansboro, NC.

He married Mary Elizabeth Morris (1825-1880) in February 1852 and they had a son William (1853-1914). He married again, Esther Davis (1831-1914) in May 1856 and they had 5 sons.
